Can you believe it, it's been 2 years since the last Eurovision Show. Last year I had to default due to real life being more bitchy than normal and this year I only just about got it done in time, with a lot of friendly reminders, prompts and pokes from [personal profile] cosmic_llin and [personal profile] charloween .

This year's Vidukon Premiere was the Norwegian Show Øyevitne - it's a 'coming-of-age/coming-out' story rolled into a crime drama, steeped in Nordic Noir story-telling. It's not actually a whodunit since we know who did it from the start, it focuses more on the 'why' and the ripple-effect of the crime as it impacts on a whole community. Some similarities to Broadchurch in that respect, I guess. The show was remade for US TV last year with some success, so I thought it would be nice to commemorate the original as well.

Streaming via youtube and download at my website.

I am running again a Eurovision vid show at this years vidUKon. (See here for previous ones if you've not been around my journal that long). The idea is to show-case European source material, vidders and music, or meta vids relating to the experience of European vidders and fandom participation. Vids from non-European vidders welcome as long as the theme or source fits the bill. And, like all VJ's, I'm always hoping for some Premieres as well. In case you've never been to the con before but would like to, check out the scholarship, which is now open, too.

Here is the place where you can brainstorm ideas for Premieres, sign up to making a Premiere or nominate already existing vids that fit the theme or source material that you would like to see a vid for. What you can do to help:

  1. Signal boost this post on LJ & DW as well as on twitter, tumblr and youtube. I am trying to represent the full diversity of European vidding and to reach out to all platforms.

  2. Let me know if you want to make a Premiere for the show. This could be vidding a European source, a European song, or both. You do not necessarily have to be a European vidder as long as you chose an appropriate source and/or song.

  3. You are a European vidder and don't want to participate, but would be happy for me to look through your back catalogue so see something I might like.

  4. You are aware of any brilliant vids of European source that have come out over the last 12 months in particular, that you think should be included in the vid show.

  5. You have ideas for European source that totally should be vidded but you don't want to do it. as inspiration for other vidders.

Last years suggestions included.... )

If you can help with any of the above, please pm or comment. And as always with my post, link gremlins are common, so if anything is not working as it should, let me know

Eurovision Show 2016

Late is better than never, right? Right??? With this in mind find here last year's Eurovison show listing - a vid show aiming to showcase European vidding talent, source and music and to celebrate the diversity of the European vidding community.

None of this would be possible without the vidders from all over the world who are contributing to this show, letting us show vids from their back catalogue, making premiere vids and providing 'vidder postcards' to introduce themselves and their vids. The latter have become an integral part of the show, setting it apart from other vid shows. The big perk of curating this show is getting to know all these lovely people and talented vidders across so many different platforms, nations and languages.

This year (well, last year) we had 13 vids (including 3 shiny premieres!!!!) in the show, two of the vidders were able to attend the convention, including Mathilde who was a first-time attendee and managed to join us despite a house fire, lack of funds and other adversities. and 6 send a vid postcard, giving the show again a very inclusive and personal feel.

Please check out the vidders vids and leave feedback at their journal, channel or tumblr to let them know that you enjoyed their work. For vids for lesser known European movies or TV shows I have included imdb links, in case you want to check out the source dircetly.

Despite repeated testing there are normally some bad/wrong links that sneak into my posts (it's a gremelin or some such thing, I'm sure), so please don't be offended if the link for your vid leads to Timelapse of paint drying or your name links to Sarah Pailin's website, just let me know and I'll fix it.

Retro Step-up by Norlack (Ukraine)
Source: Multi-fandom
Music: Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley (US)
"Put music to our troubles and we'll dance them away!" Aaron Weiss. This is a very dynamic, fun vid which is edited very tightly and looks utterly modern despite the source and music being half a century old by now.

Carousel by loki (Russia) * PREMIERE
Source: Les aventures extraordinaires d'Adele Blan-Sec (France)
Music: Peter Peter (Canada)
Dealing with suitors, monsters & sand in her shoes - just another day at the office for Adele. This vid is just as quirky as the movie. Great use of lyrics and narrative structuring make this accessible to anybody who has not seen the movie. This vid was commissioned specially for the show.

Wir Beiden by [personal profile] isagel (Sweden)
Source: Kommissar Rex (Austria)
Music: Juli (Germany)
The story of a detective and his dog. Or a dog and his detective? This is better than bromance, balm for the soul, fun, touching and sweet.

Honey And The Moon by [personal profile] anoel (US)
Source: Football RPF (Germany)
Music: Joseph McArthur (US)
This vid has a special place in my heart, the bromance, the optimism and enthusiasm of the team, and the 'aligning of the stars that made it all converge in (spoiler). And Anoel found just the right footage on and off pitch and wrapped it up as a lovely bromance story.

Ich Laufe by [personal profile] amnisias (Germany)* PREMIERE

Can't Pretend by feuwise (France)Source: The Following (US)
Music: Tom Odell (UK)
Violent and bloody, beautiful and mesmerizing - the relationship between hunter and hunted, between detective and serial killer. An obsession, an attraction, an infatuation. This vid captures it all. An no, this is not Hanibal.

Monument by[personal profile] condnsdmlk (South Africa) *PREMIERE*
Source: Calvary (Ireland)
Music: Royksopp & Robyn (Norway/Sweden)
As all of condnsdmlk's vids this has stunning editing and beautiful visuals and unfolds at slow pace, but the pay-off is so worth it.

This vid was done very quickly, it's not beta-ed and it's still kind of unfinished becaused my tech played decided to be stubborn and would just crash any time I opened the vid, so most of my time 'working on the vid' was trying to get the darn thing to render. Note to slef, SV does not like HD mp4 source.

I kind of fell head over heel for Lucifer last season, despite plenty of arguemtns against it. But what can you do? Clearly I've got a thing for snarky, politically incorrect Brits.

We had a con!

Sunday, 21 June 2015 02:23 pm
amnisias: (Default)
So, VidUKon happened last weekend, and it was such great fun, as always.

It was lovely to meet up with old friends and get to know some new folks, too - *waves* at [personal profile] kabal42 , who made his way over from Denmark. Sadly, [personal profile] goodbyebird was held captive on a ship and refused all our suggestions of sending out pirates, the Royal Navy or Furiosa to rescue her, otherwise representation from Scandinavia would have been pretty much complete - anybody knows of any Finnish vidders?

The highlight of the con was as always the Premiere shows, which was quite a bit longer than usual, and of high quality. I'll have to do a separate vid rec post at some point, when all the vids are posted. We also had the obligatory room party on Friday, hosted with impeccable style by [personal profile] lithiumdoll and [personal profile] doccy . There was cake, and more cake, and birthday cake for [personal profile] such_heights . There might have been booze. There was rumor that at one point the whole con was present. Yay for large rooms and tolerant neighbours.

As always, there was a lot of enabling going on. Last year it was Lithy who forced offered Banshee on everybody, and she only had an evil laugh when I told her that it was giving me very serious show PTSD (no, seriously, I know few people with such an evil laughter.) [personal profile] charloween took it upon herself to turn [personal profile] nemonclature and myself into cool fans by dragging us to the cinema in the middle of the night to see Mad Max Fierce Furiosa. In a less ethical move she pimped Almost Human on a poor, unsuspecting soul in Canada by reccing the fab Gone Tech by [livejournal.com profile] blithesea. I mean, who does that - making people fall for a canceled show????

As always, apart from all the hanging out with all the lovely people I enjoyed the panels the most. It was a great mix between instructional, thinky and freeform, covering such diverse topics as Problematic Fandoms ([livejournal.com profile] odessie ),Use of Colour ([livejournal.com profile] mariks & [personal profile] brokenmnemonic )and The Year in Vidding ([personal profile] such_heights ).

But the bestes about VidUkon will always be the conversations, going all the way from fannish squee & meta to RL and back. I was so glad that [personal profile] charloween was there again, since she has the uncanny ability to know what I'm talking about when words actually fail me. Seriously, she can work with me just making some vague gestures and a desperate facial expression.

I am considering to run another Eurovision vid show at this years vidUKon. (See here & here for previous ones if you've not been around my journal that long).

Here is the place where you can brainstorm ideas for Premieres, sign up to making a Premiere or nominate already existing vids that fit the theme.

The idea is to showcase European vidders, European source and European music. I'd also love to have have a meta vid with a 'European twist'. I am therfore looking for:

  1. Vidders who would want to make a Premiere for the show. This could be vidding a European source, a European song, or both.  You do not necessarily have to be a European vidder as long as you chose an appropriate source and/or song.

  2. You are a European vidder and don't want to participate, but would be happy for me to look through your back catalogue so see something I might like.

  3. You are aware of any brilliant vids of European source that have come out over the last 12 months in particular, that you think should be included in the vid show.

... in no particular order:

Being gifted a pair of socks that were made at the previous VidUKon by [livejournal.com profile] charloween. :)

Lithy doing her best impersination of a drug deal, just that she was peddling Banshee episodes instead of drugs. You know the type. It starts of all inocently by mentioning it in passing, then you sneak a vid into the first vid show of the con, all finished off by mentioning, in hushed tones and with a conspiratorial smile, that she's got All THE EPISODES on her computer and offering a taster download. Oh, and Doccy all inocently mentioning man pain and PTSD, during dinner. I should have seen it coming. Only upside is, I was not the only victim - I'm pretty sure anybody with sufficient storage capacity on their Laptop ended up with Banshee on it.

Getting to meet [livejournal.com profile] condnsdmlk in person and her being even more awesome than I tought she would be. She is so much fun to hang out with, guys.

Hanging out in Lithy's room, having lazy conversations, cup cakes & drinks and watching vids.

[livejournal.com profile] charloween and [livejournal.com profile] condnsdmlk sharing their collection of remarkable cover versions of various songs that need to be vidded.

Getting to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] isagel and [livejournal.com profile] spankulert (who only made it to the con due to Neptunes timely intervention) again. [livejournal.com profile] jagwriter78 was there, too, but we didn't get an aweful lot of time to talk, somehow. I love how many people from overseas made the effort this year, it made the con really special for me.

Me accussing [livejournal.com profile] fray_adjacent12 of being German in lieu of a greeting and her being all chillaxed about it. And her turning out to be a very awesome lady, and much fun to hang out with.

The panel on the beginnings of video remix culture, with 3 accademics from 3 countries (how awesome is this con?). So much food for though, so many great examples (I actuallly got to see some more outside of the panel, since char had to many to show them all). Great stuff!

Last year VidUkon Premieres were rather dark and serious, so I opted for something fun & fluffy this year (appearantly everybody else had the same idea, because the whole show was much more upbeat & light-hearted).

I really enjoyed Gracelands first seaon last summer, the fun SoCal athmosphere, the lovely community feel in the 'house' and the slash-potential between Mike & Briggs (or pretty much any other two or threeway imaginable - you don't even have to squint). So this is that vid - Mike loves the way it feels, living on the beach, handeling big guns, going under-cover and knowing Briggs is always there when he needs him. No hidden depth here and not betaed either, so don't expect anything else than fun & squee.

A vid show showcasing European vidding talent and European source and celibrates the diversity of the European vidding community.

As last year, my biggest 'Thank You' goes out to all the vidders who have let me show their vids, agreed to make premieres especially for the vid show and contributed 'vid postcards' to introduce themseves and their vids. I've had such lovely feedback and participation across all platforms and vidding communities and the responses have been positive throughout, even though the timing of VidUKon this year meant that some people were right in the middle of their exams when I was pestering them with my requests.

This year we had 13 vids (including 3 shiny premieres!!!!) in the show, two of the vidders were able to attend the convention and 6 send a vid postcard, giving the show again a very inclusive and personal feel.

Please check out the vidders vids and leave feedback at their journal, channel or tumblr to let them know that you enjoyed their work. For vids for lesser known European movies or TV shows I have included imdb links, in case you want to check out the source dircetly.

You might have caught the news that there will be another VidUKon in Cardiff in June this year!!! Last year I arrange an Eurovision Show showcasing European vidders and source. Lots of vidders participated, many with premieres specifically made for the show, as well as little vid postcards to introduce themselves and their corner of the world, which was a really lovely starting point for the con. I'm hoping to put together another Eurovision vid show for the next con, and this is where you guys come in!

EUROPEAN VIDDERS WANTED!

By the way, just like Eurovison Song Contest, our definition of European is flexible and fluid, it includes both Russia and Israel, as well as Eurpean Ex-pats living in New Zealand (or elsewhere) and everybody else who considers themselves vaguely European.

The focus of the show will again be to showcase European vidding talent and introduce lesser know European source to a wider audience. If you use non-European source it would be nice if the vid would still have a European slant (e.g. use of European locations, actors or historical events). Meta vids are also encouraged - last year we had a brilliant vid from Faith who won last years CreaCon competion about her experience vidding for the event! (I think one could make a great vid contrasting the differences of Originals and US remakes of TV shows) Use of non-English songs is always encouraged but not required.

If you are a European vidder, make yourself know to me, best with a link to your back catalog, since it is unlikelly we will have enough Premieres for the whole show, so I will need to start trawling the net soon for contenders.
So, if you are a European vidder and fancy to make a premiere for the show, comment or PM me.
If you are not a vidder or don't want to make a vid but know European source that totally should have it's own vid, please comment.
If you are neither of the above you can still signalboost this post, unbeknowst to you there might be Europeans lurking on your flist. (When I posted last year I found out that there were a handful of Germans on my flist - and I'd never even suspected....)
If you are active on other platforms as well, please signal boost there as well, if you don't mind. If you know European vidder who are active on other platforms but not on LJ, let me know or link me to them, I'm particularly keen on linking up with people who are using youtube as their predomenant distribution platform.

Source that has been suggested for vids include
La Reine Margot, French movie
Kommisar Rex, Austrian TV show
Les Revenants, French TV show
Anno 1790, Swedish TV show
Sissi, German movie seriens
Luemmel von der ersten Bank, German
Forbrydelsen (The Killing), Danish TV
Borgen, Danish TV
Bron/Broen (The Bridge), Swedish/Danish TV
Antonia's Line (which is the most amazing film, but I have the DVD and the film quality is so bad I don't have the heart to vid it myself - I'm ridiculous I know!)
Das Boot
Das Experiment
The Three COlors Trilogy
Metropolis
Subway (I have a feeling this has been vidded? Not sure)
Nikita (The 1990 Film)
Let the Right One In
Les Bleus, French TV show

but I'm sure people have many more suggestions, keep them comming in.

If you have any other ideas, questions, suggestions or what-no, please put them in the comments, this is brain-storming time, nothing is set in stone yet.

So let's have it!

Edited 3rd February to include further suggestions.
Edited 30th March to include further suggestions.

KMMM

The front end of 2013 was incredibly busy for me and I really struggled to meet the deadline for VidUKon - it took a really limited source (movie) and short song to make this happen. This is a sort of fix-it vid, since the movie is actually a weired mix between a bitter-sweet underdog friendship story, sprinkled with some rather bad comedic set pieces. I cut out all the crappy comdey and just foucused on the story between the two leads. The downside of short songs is that they are frigging short, so I had to cut lose a lot of scenes that I really wanted to have in the vid. Endless gratitude to [livejournal.com profile] maichan
and [livejournal.com profile] icepixie who did a brilliant beta job on ultra short notice, even with referrence to the German lyrics. My flist never ceases to amaze me!

Show-casing European Vidders, European Soure and European Music

A big 'Than You' to all the brilliant vidders who contributed, those who agreed to make shiny new Premiere vids just for this show and those who let me show a vid from their back catalogue. Several of the vidders in this show are not using LJ as their primary distribution platform and did not know me, but everybody I approached was more than happy to help out. A good number of vidders were interested in attending the con but for many this is not feasible due to costs, distance and sometimes visa issues - so we decided to make a little intro vid with 'greetings' from all those who wanted to contribute and I am still amazed and grateful how much work people have put into those vidlets and slide shows, they really gave the show a special feel and were very much enjoyed by the audience!

The vid show contains 14 vids made by vidders from 10 different countries, source from 7 countries and 4 Premieres. Since the show had to be under 50 minutes I could not include all the vids I wanted but I tried to include vidders, source and music from as many different countries as possible. I have also added imdb links for the non-English movies for those of you who want to check any of them out.

Please check out the vids and leave feedback to the vidders if you enjoyed their work - even if they are not based on LJ - I know it will greatly appreciated.

I'm sure you've all already heard the exciting news that the next VídUKon goes down in May 2013!!

I am playing with the idea of putting together a vid show that showcases European vidding. At the last VidUKon there was a UK themed vid show, but this time I'd like to focus on non-british vidders, source and non-english songs. At this point the concept is still pretty vague, so I thought I'd trawl the internets a bit to see what's already out there.

So, if you know any other French, German, Italian, Swedish, Russian etc vidders out there that are not on my flist, let me know (I'm guessing there are some vidders who prefer to blog/interact in their own language and I want to make sure I throw the net as wide as possible. I'm also looking for recs for any vids using non-english European source or songs (not neccessarily the vidders native language, though I assume that's the most likely scenario...) Self-recs are defenitely encouraged!

If you know of any non-english vidding coms please feel free to repost this entry with a link to this post, that would be very helpful.

Just in case any of you guys didn't catch this last week, I just wanted to let you know that the amazingly enthusiastic [livejournal.com profile] buffyann is looking into the possibility of there being another VidUKon in 2013. So, if you are interested in attending an European Vidding Con, bookmark the [livejournal.com profile] vidukon community to keep yourself up-to-date with what's going on.

But, more importantly, please consider getting involved in the organization, because without more UK/Euorpe based people helping out with all the small, medium and big jobs that need doing to make a con happen, there ain't gonna be another one. Don't fret about what you can or can't do at this point, just read Alex's post and let her know that you're interested.

I've now been back from Cardiff long enough to feel that I can post my impressions without being totally overwhelmed by squee and capslock. )There's much more stuff to say about the con, but it's late now and I need food, and sleep, so I'll leave it at this for now.

VidUKon 2011 in Cardiff is open for registrations for another week

Have a look here to see what's on offer.

If you can find a good connection to Manchester I am happy to put people up for a couple of nights, I've already somebody else staying, but have space for some more. So, dear European flister (I am pointedly looking at YOU) I am looking forward to getting to meet you in Cardiff next month.
