The dog's reading list...
Saturday, 20 February 2010 06:08 pmFinally managed to finish McCarthy's 'The Road'.
I had a pretty good idea of where the story was heading and it still had me in floods of tears when I got there, - now that's what I call powerful writing. Everybody talks about how bleak and depressing the book is (and it certainly is), but what stunned me most was that McCarthy managed to make the end, - despite all the quiet despair and loss - a hopeful and optimistic one. I think the reason it took me so long to finish the book was that I was worried that it would be a very nihilistic end. I should have trusted the writer more, he knew his characters well and he turned the book around on the last page. I think I like this even better than 'The Crossing'.
I know a lot of people struggle with the minimalistic style (and if you're my Mum, the use of Spanish) of McCarthy's writing but I find there is a stunning beauty in the stillness and quietness of the world he describes. Makes my spine shiver.
And now I need to drive 20 miles to catch the movie in the only cinema that's still showing it.
