I'm sure you've all already heard the exciting news that the next VídUKon goes down in May 2013!!

I am playing with the idea of putting together a vid show that showcases European vidding. At the last VidUKon there was a UK themed vid show, but this time I'd like to focus on non-british vidders, source and non-english songs. At this point the concept is still pretty vague, so I thought I'd trawl the internets a bit to see what's already out there.

So, if you know any other French, German, Italian, Swedish, Russian etc vidders out there that are not on my flist, let me know (I'm guessing there are some vidders who prefer to blog/interact in their own language and I want to make sure I throw the net as wide as possible. I'm also looking for recs for any vids using non-english European source or songs (not neccessarily the vidders native language, though I assume that's the most likely scenario...) Self-recs are defenitely encouraged!

If you know of any non-english vidding coms please feel free to repost this entry with a link to this post, that would be very helpful.

Janka/Janna is a Polish/German series for children that aired in the late 80s/early 90s and I absolutely ADORED IT. I still do, even though it's very oldfashioned of course, but it's just one of those things :-) I have all episodes but they appear to be of the same quality as this YT video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyl1Hx6QmIs), which might be too bad for a big screen premiere. Krabat sadly is about twenty minutes too long and drags on a bit, but it has absolutely stunning visiuals, which is why I'm tempted. And because it's a fantasy movie based on a German source, you know? (Plus, Daniel Brühl as a warlock. I mean :-) ) And Knockin' on Heaven's Door I just plain love but I watch it very rarely because it breaks me so much every time :-)

Ah, thank you :-) Will do!

(You're not making the choice easier :-) )

By the way, I've never submitted something to a vid show--are there certain things I need to be aware of? Credits/format/size?

Ehm, yes, that's pretty much how my thought process worked, too.

Vidding for a vid show is no diffent from vidding for web relase, other than source quality. All vids need to be rendered/converted to DVD standard (seperate wav & mpeg files. Here's boppy's post from the last con: http://vidukon.livejournal.com/26463.html

You can use Ian's LamaEnc (via VVC website) to covert files. If you get stuch let me know. Just for safty reason (and for my personal colection) I'd also like a copy of the original file, in case we need to re-encode if there are problems.

My life was pretty much complete at that point. (I just reeeeaaaaally adore him.)

Ah, yes--I seemed to remember they had to be converted a certain way. No idea how to do it so I'm very grateful for the link. Will bookmark and get back to you in case I get stuck. Yay! I think I'll spend tomorrow looking for songs :-)

(Will do.)

Just to give you a heads up--I'm considering vidding "Krabat" to a version of the "Merseburger Zaubersprüche". Love the mood and it fits the fairytale-ish atmosphere, plus the lyrics are in Old High German so _nobody_ except scholars can understand them :-) Found a nice version that lasts about 3min, we'll see if it works as a vid...

Wow, that sounds very cool and intriguing. Don't know the song but it sounds like a perfect fit. With respects to lyrics there are three ways to go: old fashioned subtitling, incroporating text in the vid as & when needed, putting a title card up at the beginning of the vid with a stanza or the chorus to give a flavour or nothing at all. It all comes down to how much you think the lyrics are important to the understanding of the vid, and how much text will distract from the visuals. So far I don't have any vids with subs, but it can be done (she says confidently). Most people either bet on the visuals being strong enough on their own, or using a title card.

Thanks for the heads up - much apprecitated. I don't like hasseling people, but a message every 2-3 to keep me up to speed on progress would be great.

Looking forward to seing you vid - it's sounds pretty amazing cakes.

It's very cool. They're actually different versions of it--the Merseburger Zaubersprüche are some of the oldest pieces of German literature, and occasionally they get set to music. I wish I could find a slightly more up-tempo version that doesn't have people grunting the words, so I'll probably go with a more folky version instead. (It's lovely; I just wished it sounded a bit more dramatic.) I think I might just ignore the lyrics completely--they're literally incomprehendable even for Germans, but they *are* magic spells which I think could be neat. Good idea about the title cards, I might use that to give a brief introduction about the song...?

(By the way, here's a trailer for Krabat: it really does have very strong visuals, I'm getting really excited about vidding it now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUd43YtS20Y )

Every 2-3? Days? Weeks? :-)

Man, I hope so...aaaaagh, handholding required.

Sorry - weeks.

it's a great source - and really in the spirit of what I was going for - show casing some of the stunning source that is available from non-English countries. Not to get me wrong, I love US & UK shows, but it's not the end-all, be-all. And would love there to be more national vidding communities as well and international exchange of ALL source and music.

So, no pressure ;) (just kidding - vid your ID!)

Okay :-)

Absolutely. I think I might not even have a strong narrative in this vid--just show off how pretty it is and how magical and how much I love Daniel Brühl.

Not to get me wrong, I love US & UK shows, but it's not the end-all, be-all.
This. I actually have friends who tell me that they don't watch German movies because German movies aren't entertaining/good/well-made and that just profoundly puzzles me. "Krabat" isn't perfect, certainly, but neither are most US/UK fantasy films. "Keinohrhasen" holds his own pretty well in terms of Rom-Coms, Bully Herbig's stuff is amazing and hilarious and other films like "Goodbye Lenin" or "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" or "Sonnenallee" are just fantastic movies. So yes, this is a big issue of mine and why I'm so excited for your vid show :-)

(Will do! Just hope the song doesn't get too boring, it's pretty repetitive...but only 3 minutes as well...will have to put focus on the source, then.)
