Sorry for mixing pleassure with politics...

THURSDAY, APRIL 26

– NBC is pulling the fourth episode of Hannibal entirely, at creator Bryan Fuller's request, reports Variety. The episode's story centered on a group of children brainwashed–by guest star Molly Shannon–into killing other children, and because of the Newtown shootings and the bombings in Boston, Fuller felt "the associations that came with the subject matter ... would inhibit the enjoyment of the overall episode." The episode isn't being rescheduled; it's being canned entirely. NBC plans to post relevant scenes from the episode that explain character development with Fuller's commentary online at a future date. Hannibal will jump straight into Episode 5, and the first season will be shorted by a week. The finale will now air on June 20. Though the entire fourth episode is being pulled, NBC insists there will be no continuity issues from skipping it. The fourth episode will air overseas, however.

The States never cease to baffle me - repeated mass shotings don't move the policy makers to change gun laws, but a bomb detonation affects TV programming. Don't get me wrong, this is not a critizism of Fuller's decision - I'm sure he knows what's best, and showing some sensitiviy is welcome, I just wish the politicians did the same.

On a similar note todays BBC4's Question Time was recorded in New York, and one of the panel members said, when asked about gun control laws, that people did not demand pressure cookers to be taken off the market either due to the Boston bombing, it was just about making sure they did not get in the wrong hands. And the same applies to semi-automatic weapons. Mind boggles.

Don't try to make sense out of it. That's a good way to make your brains leak out your ears.

Oh, I wish that was true, that would make it so much easier. But there was another politician on the panel (I'm assuming liberal) who said that at a recent poll 90% of people were or the suggested ammendment in gun control. So clearly the majority of Americans are rational, reasonable and considerate people. I'm assuming the remaining 10% were conservatives and the gun lobby....

Yeah, it's true that most Americans -- even conservatives -- wanted the bill to go through. And that there were primarily Republican Congressmen and women who stopped the bill.

This is why we can't have nice things. A minority of people have control over everything.

You're right. I normally try to ignore stuff like this, but sometimes it just gets to you, you know.

Yes, clearly I'm having too high expectations. And I totally keep forgetting that you're in the US - your LJ looks so Japanese (to the European eye, at least?)

his invocation of newtown - which was LAST YEAR - strikes me as kind of weird, because wouldn't that have occurred to them when they wrote and shot the episode? and if it was ok then, why is it suddenly not ok now?

because we're much more interested in a quick bandaid than an actual long-term fix.

That really summs up perfectly the odd mismatch between the two reactions that I find so difficult to understand.

By the way, I'm glad you're okay, and hope you're not feeling too freaked out by the last few days. Have a good weekend.
