amnisias: (violater)
If you write historical fanfic (or fic) this is for you!

Voices from the Old Bailey on BBC 4 - a great series that uses 17th century court cases to bring history to life. The last two seasons are still available via the bbc 4 webstite, check out 'Smuggling' or 'Murder' in season 3 for the more gruesome aspects of the Georgian era, or 'Sexual Subcultures' and 'Servants' for a look at Gorgian society. Fascinating stuff.

If you don't like listening to podcasts (or they don't work for you) - you can actually check out the records of the Old Bailey yourself, as well as a number of church, hosiptal and graveyard records. If you are interested in a different period - the Connected Histories website has resources covering 1500 - 1900. All databases are fully searchable. I'm telling you - for me this a black hole worse than youtube, I can spend hours reading case files, verdics and testimonies. Some of the stuff is very moving, other things can be rather distressing, but it's such a great way to bring history alive, and gives a voice to the 'ordinary folk' that is not often heard, though they don't necessarily got what we would consider justice nowadays.

Fascinating stuff.
