If you're in the market for a rom com type movie and don't mind a movie that is aimed at teen (I know, those are two pretty big IFs) than you will enjoy The First Time, I think.

I checked this out really only because I like both Dylan O'Brian and Britt Robertson on TV, and because I'm a sucker for fluff on a Friday evening. I had little expectations (always a good place to start), but this was a real pleasure to watch, and pretty much consistently side-stepped all those boring, horrid rom-com tropes that most these movies realy on. You know, like people making stupid choices (I love you but I think you don't love you so I'll go and snog some other bloke to show you how much I'm hurting), silly misunderstandings (I saw you doing XYZ and instead of asking you what that was all about and giving you a piece of my mind I am just going to assume that it was because you do not love me) and forced fall outs 10 min before the end (I love you so much and therefor I think we must break up because XYZ) somebody racing in a taxi to the airport to declare endless love. And every time this movie got to a juncture where this would have been the expected outcome, they just totally side-stepped it and the teens behaved in a mature and rational manner. They communicated about stuff. They resolved issues fairly. The got back on track. Also, the most realistic deptiction of the 'first time' I've seen in a long while in this kind of movie. Most of this is obviously down to the writing, but the two leads really pulled it off perfectly and gave nuanced performances. Reminded me a bit of John Hughes movies.

This is not mind blowing by any strech of the imagination, but a perflectly good take on this genre, and a pleasant way to spend an evening. Also available on youtube
