First of, thanks so much for all of you who completed the polls (despite teething problems). Response rate varied between 17 and 26, which at a flist of around 51 works out somewhere around the 50% mark, which means this should be reasonably representative.

Spaceships, sci-fi and Vampires coming out top - no big surprise there. I didn't expect Angel to trump Buffy, though, purely because I didn't think anybody who didn't love Buffy got into Angel, so that's interesting. The top five shows have been off the air for a while.
I also looked at all positive statements combined, and Star Trek (16/17), Firefly (15/17), Buffy (17/14), Angel (17/13), Battlestar Galactica, Farscape and Dr Who (all three 12/17) come out top, so the starship connection is even stronger here.

What's not for you?

I was suprised to find a rather fluffy procedural to beat two of fandoms favorite fail!shows (Dollhouse and Hawaii 5-0). Glee clearly united the embarrassment!squick vote, and Supernatural is the only show who polorises people and is present in both the 'fannish' and 'not for me' top 5. I think this can be explained by the fact that it's one of only two shows that are still on the air at the moment.

I expected to see non-North American shows in here like the first two, fluffy romantic shows like One Tree Hill and Felicity, and realistic dramatic shows like In Treatment and Southland. Nikita, Legend of the Seeker and Veronica Mars (this one in particular) took me by surprise. Nikita and Veronica Mars have female leads, which normally goes down well with feminist faction, Veronica was a kind of 'Buffy replacement for the next generation' (that's at least how it was sold to me) and had Joss Whedon's approval. Legend of the Seeker seemed to have such a large following at the time.

Maybe there is another factor here in terms of accessibility? The American TV landscape appears very complicated, so some of these shows very possible burried on some obscure channel or payTV? Though, if I can get hold of it in the UK accessiblility shouldn't come into it... Any thoughts on this?

Then I also worked out how much I have in common with folk on my flist. For the purpose of this I only looked at those of you who voted identical to me. If I had broadened the criteria up (e.g. counting people who feel fannish about suff I like and like stuff I feel fannish about the list would have included pretty much everybody, which pleases me enormously, but wouldn't really be useful for this excercise in dorkism.

It's interesting to me to look at the overlaps with the different people. With some it's a common interest in certain types of shows (e.g realistic dramas like Homeland, Southland or In Treatment, or the Whedonverse) with other very random and sometimes suprising. One thing that I didn't quite expec is that very few of you used the 'guilty pleasure' rating (three people once each) whereas I've got seven shows in that category. Yes, I'm in the closet with some of my shows. On the other hand, lots of people like certain shows but do not watch it religiously. That is a skill I'm missing, but could use really well. I'm a completist when it comes to TV. Unless a show really pisses me of and I stop watching (Heroes, I'm looking at you!) I am very loyal and go through thick and thin with my shows. Through hell, srsly ridiculous hallucinations, yoyo relatinships (pet peeve) and the wrong couples getting toghether. It's very time consuming and not always good for my emotional well being.

Fannish participation
Watching vids (10-15/17)Make vids (17/22)
Read fic (8-11/17)Used to write fic (10/22)
Read meta (5-7/17)Write meta (9/22)
Look at fan-art (4-10/17)Write fic (7/17)

There is a wrong vidding bias here, which makes sense since I probably say that vidding is my fandom, too. It pleases me that people are such active particpants and produce as much as or more than they consume. I was suprised to find that fic writing only came fourth, and that such a lot of people used to do but don't anymore. I'm wondering whether it's a bit like a gate way drug for vidders? I also didn't expect reading and writing meta to be up so high on people's activities. Again, this pleases me.

The fannish platforms people use did not really bring many surprises. The poll very obviously was biased towards LJ, to start with. Nearly everybody (19/26) also used dreamwidth, so cross-posting is the norm now, I guess. I should have asked how many have comments disabled on one of the platforms, because I find that to be one of the biggest barrier to communication. (I know I can still comment via OpenID, but frankly, I only use that if I feel very passionat about the topic. For a lot of the more random, every-day comments it's takes too much time.) Conventions were much more popular (18/26) than I assumed, because it seemed like a lot of people have issues with conventions for all sorts of reasons. Maybe I should have seperated Fandom cons, Show-specific cons, vidding cons and 'official cons' with actors present? The latter are probably dividing opinions much more, and vidding cons seem to be a bit of fan-political mine field. Twitter (14/26) is still narrowly beating Tumblr (12/26) which according to this is much less popular than I thought it was (less than 50%. But I guess it's were the twenty-odd people on my flist that didn't poll are hanging out right now. ;)
